Solid-state batteries, also known as solid-state batteries, are a special type of battery in which the electrolyte consists of solid material. Solid-state batteries are often referred to as the holy grail of battery research, as they should enable greater storage capacities and faster charging processes in the future and promise more safety and a higher energy density. Our guest, Prof. Jürgen Janek, explains whether he shares the hype and which hurdles still have to be overcome on the way to mass production in the next few years.
In any case, the auto industry has high hopes for the technology. VW is planning its own solid-state battery factory with Quantumscape. Toyota has teamed up with Panasonic and are planning to start small series production in 2025. BMW and Ford have recently invested in SOLIDpower from the USA.
