Admittedly, it sounds promising: "XNRGI has developed a super battery that is supposed to solve all the problems of the current battery generation in one fell swoop," wrote the industry insider Energyload last year. A newly developed lithium metal battery promises six times the energy density, more safety, and fast charging times. Electric cars could travel up to 1,000 kilometers with this new battery.
The battery revolution is based on a process that has already been patented: The basis for this are so-called "wafers", which are also used in semiconductor production. These approximately 30 centimeters large disks are provided with up to 160 million tiny holes and coated on both sides: one side with a conductive material (lithium and other metals), the other with a non-conductive material.
Almost six months after the announcement of these full-bodied plans, battery researcher Prof. Maximilian Fichtner comments on the company's plans. Small spoiler: His enthusiasm is (still) limited.
