The GS-EES addresses the full interdisciplinary spectrum of electrochemical energy storage and conversion, from fundamental science to processing and application.
Research fields are Li-ion batteries, post Li batteries, fuel cells, etc.
The GS-EES operates within the Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage CELEST.
Doctoral researchers doing their research in the framework of POLiS take part in the Graduate School Electrochemical Energy Storage. POLiS funds about 60 Doctoral researchers.

The Graduate School Electrochemical Energy Storage is located at two main sites, at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and at Ulm University (UUlm). In addition, also the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research (ZSW) at Ulm und the JLU Giessen participate in the activities.

Job description
The project is concerned with the development and application of a microstructure-resolved simulation tool for Na-ion batteries. As a member of an internationally leading research team in the field of microstructure-resolved simulation of batteries, you will develop a novel framework for Na-ion batteries, which is the first step towards automated material simulation. The physical models will be tightly coupled with data-based methods to accelerate the development of new electrodes and cell concepts..

- Above-average Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, engineering sciences, or similar.

Job description
One task of the research is to develop a Na-ion-pouch full cells with the aim, to provide a reference cell for POLiS. For this development we are looking for a Ph. D. students at the Institute for Applied Materials – Energy Storage Systems (IAM-ESS).
The work includes all aspects of cell manufacturing, testing and analysis of the results. Particularly the formation process in the full cell should be investigated in more detail, e. g. through analysis of gaseous and liquid components of the electrolyte. Besides, important features of the Na-ion cell will be correlated to a reference Li-ion cell and it should be identified whether Na-ion based cells will meet the requirements in application. All work will be perfromed at the Battery Technology Center at KIT.
We offer you the opportunity to complete the promotion within three years. You will also be a member of the graduate school electrochemical energy storage (GS-EES). During this time, you will work in an interdisciplinary working group at IAM-ESS. You will have access to the excellent research infrastructure and experimental facilities at KIT. You will also collaborate in interdisciplinary fields with project partners within the cluster of excellence POLiS.

Personal qualification
You have a scientific university degree (Diploma (Uni)/ Master) in chemistry, materials science or similar qualifications. Knowledge in the field of battery storage materials, characterization thereof with suitable analytical methods.and first battery or electrochemical experience are desired. Proficiency in English language (C1) and German language (C1) is mandatory. In addition, we require excellent collaboration skills with internal and external partners.

Workshop Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy EIS
Goal
Aim of the lectures is to supply the researchers with knowledge about the physical principles and practical analysis of impedance spectra applied to electrochemical systems. The researchers will learn about the fundamentals of frequency response analysis and system identification theory, how to acquire impedance spectra with minimized artefacts, how to analyse impedance spectra and extract significant physical parameters. The researchers will also acquire knowledge on state-of-the-art impedance methods for analysis of non-linear and non-stationary systems.
Schedule
The workshop will be held online. It consists of two blocks.
Block 1: Lectures, 15.03.2021 - 17.03.2021
Block 2: Practical aspects of EIS analysis will be addressed by processing example spectra of lithium-ion batteries in home assignments. The results of these practical exercises will be discussed in a seminar (31.03.2021).

Block course "Materials, Functioning and Technology of Batteries" 2020 Part 2

Part 2 will be held online. Due to that, there will be no exam for this year's block course.
The block course is only for POLiS / CELEST affiliates and members of the GS-EES.
The program of the 2nd part of the block course is designed for attendees of the 1st part.
XPS Workshop
Goal
The workshop mainly aims at researchers who (plan to) use XPS service in their studies.
You will learn about the fundamentals, the potential and the restrictions of the method.
The main goal of the workshop is to improve your skills in preparing your XPS measurements and in peak fitting / interpreting the measured spectra.
Schedule
The workshop will mainly be held online but you will also perform an XPS measurement in groups of two. These measurements can either be done at the IAM-ESS with Vanessa Trouillet for researchers from Karlsruhe or at the HIU with Thomas Diemant for researchers from Ulm. Individual appointments will be made for this with the groups.
Time & Date: Several sessions between 20.10.2020 and 04.11.2020 (see schedule in flyer)
